Literary twist to anti-litter day

Sunday’s community litter-pick at Kingsmead Field featured a literary twist.

The event was held to celebrate Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Your Park Week and started with a story-reading by local author and illustrator Priscilla Lamont from her new book Hodge Podge Lodge (a rubbish story).

To be published in the autumn, the children’s book features an extremely messy family of pigs and tells the story of the way in which their disgruntled neighbours eventually persuade them to change their habits.

Children at the event were able to make their own pig masks and try their hand at litter-picking on Kingsmead Field.

Organiser Yvonne Rigby said: “The aim of Sunday’s event was to do something a bit different to raise awareness of the problems caused by litter.

“The gorgeous illustrations and lovely story of the pig family managed to do that perfectly.”

The Friends of Kingsmead Field hope that the book will be used by local nurseries and primary schools and also by the city council in its Love Where We Live campaign.
