Man dies following crash on major route

Vehicles will be coming off the coastbound A2, right hand side, and on to a new slip road into Canterbury

A man in his 60s has died after a crash on the A2 close to the Brenley Corner roundabout yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called out at just before 4.30pm following a collision between a road sweeper and a lorry on the London-bound carriageway some 550 yards before the junction with the M2.

Both carriageways were shut as emergency services dealt with the scene.

The collision involved a white Iveco road sweeper and a red Mercedes lorry.

It caused huge delays in both directions with slow-moving traffic stretching back as far as the A28 at Thanington.

The driver of the road sweeper, who is from the Isle of Sheppey, was airlifted to a London hospital and later died.

Road closures were put in place until 1.15am this morning (Tuesday).

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is now appealing for any witnesses to contact it.

Anyone who has yet to speak to police or who may have dashcam footage is asked to contact the witness appeal line on 01622 798538.
