Planners have approved a fourth Wincheap slip road off the A2.
The road will take coastbound drivers on to the A28 close to Morrisons and completes the intersection with the A2 in all directions.
Councillor Ashley Clark said the slip road would help divert cars away from central Canterbury.
He added: “This involves significant reductions in terms of pollutants. We mush push this through.”
Developer Pentland Homes, which is building 750 houses at Thanington, is paying for the £8.8 million project.
